Yep, before we even think we have anything to say about economics, we've already got an idea in our minds of what an 'economist' looks like. And for most of us, they're white men.
According to a recent report by the American Economic Association, the number of women represented in the profession is around half the number of men. And that's 25% more than it was 40 years ago.
When we asked one of the kids whether he thought that most economists were men, he said yes because he "only ever sees men on the business news."
Given that a Nobel Prize in Economics has only ever been awarded to one person of color, and one woman, it's hardly a surprise that we're quick to assume all economists look pretty much the same... when really, they should probably just look as diverse as everyone else.
